Years after a notorious guardian-ghost bargain, a mundane public defender takes on a case involving a client who claims to be hunted by an immortal with a human heart-shaped absence. To prove the story, the defender teams up with the client’s reluctant celestial tracker—one who can only cast magic within strict, ancient legal “stipulations” written into the city’s ley lines. As both are forced into late-night chases through alleys where mirrors lie and streetlights remember, they realize the immortal’s hunt is not for the client, but for the defender’s hidden connection to the first contract. The irony is unbearable: the defender can see the terms of the curse in plain sight, yet everyone else will insist the truth is impossible—until the last loophole closes.
